WINDY HILLS, Ky. —

Fort Knox soldiers held a wreath-laying ceremony in Louisville in honor of President Zachary Taylor on Monday.

Monday marked what would have been Taylor's 241st birthday.

The gravesite ceremony is held every year at the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery off Brownsboro Road.

Taylor served as America's 12th president for 16 months before his death in 1850.

Commanders say Taylor should be remembered for his distinguished military career.

"He served in the army for four decades, a war hero several times over, and really humble beginnings. But he was known as rough and ready. He was one of those folks that was ready for combat and would serve his country at a moment's notice and rally the troops, said Maj. Gen. Kelly Dickerson, U.S. Army Reserve 84th Training Command.
