ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A large structure fire broke out overnight Monday in Edgewood on Mayson Avenue.

Atlanta Fire Rescue tells Atlanta News First that the building is an abandoned church.

Crews responded to the intersection of Hardee Street and Mayson Avenue for a reported structure fire.

Neighbor and former church member Anquita Mitchell tells Atlanta News First that the building was set to be demolished this week.

“Obviously, there’s an expectation that the church is going to come down. I think just having it happen in this manner is the heartbreaking part about it,” Mitchell said.

The building was formerly home to New St. John Missionary Baptist Church, before the church moved locations in 2021.
