A 'devoted' NHS midwife who has dedicated 30 years of her life to helping others has been left sedated and hooked up to a ventilator after her holiday to Barbados descended into a nightmare.

Alison Phillips, from Whitefield , Bury, jetted off to the Caribbean Island with her friends on November 2 to celebrate her 60th birthday. Flying over 4,000 miles away from home for the trip, she quickly began to feel unwell.

The mum-of-two, who had also taken out travel insurance for the once in a lifetime trip, went to the doctors with symptoms of a chest infection and was sent back to her hotel with antibiotics, her pregnant daughter Abi said.
