A drug-addled burglar stole a car and drove it at high speed through the streets of Kirkdale , swerving into the wrong lane and crashing head-on with a van driver on his way to work. Brian Thompson, 53, left carnage in his wake after stealing the Volvo from outside a house he had burgled days earlier.

Thompson, of Field Lane in Fazakerley , stole a spare set of car keys from a house on Pennard Avenue, Huyton , some time before September 4 last year. He returned to the property in the early hours on September 4 and used the keys to drive off with a Volvo that was parked outside.
