HAYWARD, Calif. (KRON) -- Hayward firefighters are responding to a fire at a building located at A Street and Mission Blvd in downtown Hayward.

The building houses a jewelry store and a sign shop, and there may be apartments upstairs. Firefighters have been on the scene for the last half hour, working to control the blaze.

A witness reported seeing people evacuating the building as black smoke poured from it.
