Sirens went off at 1 a.m. Tuesday near Estacada , along with public warnings that Portland General Electric’s River Mill dam could fail and area residents should evacuate immediately, people in the area wrote on social media.

The electric utility confirmed in a statement that an alarm went off in error.

“At about 1:00 a.m. today, an alarm at PGE’s Rivermill Dam mistakenly signaled an issue at the dam,” PGE spokesperson Drew Hanson said in an email. “This was a false alarm. The dam is secure, and there is no risk to public safety.”

“We apologize for the disruption and concern this caused our neighbors,” Hanson added.

The River Mill dam is a hydroelectric plant that lies on the Clackamas River just north of Estacada.
