WASHINGTON — Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced Tuesday that Getaround, a car-sharing company, will pay $75,000, including refunds to 50 D.C. customers who were misled about the company's car insurance coverage and charged large and unexpected damage fees.
While the company does not operate in North America, the settlement also requires the company to provide a 90-day notice to Schwalb if it begins operating in D.C. again. The Office of Attorney General launched an investigation that found evidence that Getaround misled consumers and violated DC consumer protection law and the terms of a 2021 settlement agreement with the office.
Getaround is a car-sharing company that allows consumers to rent vehicles from individual owners who list their cars on the platform. In 2020, the Office
