WASHINGTON — Nearly 82 million Americans are expected to travel more than 50 miles from their home during the Thanksgiving holiday, which runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, according to AAA. That is 1.6 million travelers more compared to the same time last year.

AAA says traveling by car is the preferred mode of transportation during the Thanksgiving period, with an estimated 73 million people hitting the road. That represents nearly 90% of travelers.

Transportation officials say the number of people opting to travel by car may increase with flight cancellations and delays.

The flight reductions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration during the government shutdown have been lifted, but the disruptions in air travel have left an impression on some travelers.
