ATLANTA — As families prepare to cook delicious meals for their loved ones this holiday season, here are some ways home cooks can avoid igniting kitchen fires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, more home cooking fires happen in the United States on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year. And the Peach State is number one.

State Farm reports that from January 1, 2024, to November 2025, they paid nearly $234 million for indoor and outdoor cooking fire losses. The national average cost of a cooking fire exceeds $73,000.

Here are the top ten states by cost during that time period, according to State Farm:

Georgia - $19.6 million

Illinois - $17.8 million

Michigan - $12.3 million

Texas - $11.6 million

Pennsylvania $11.4 million
