When Mike Kenny was a fifth-grade teacher in Essex Junction, he learned early in his career that the traditional way to teach math, which includes repetitive practice of math problems, did not work for many of his students.

Frustrated with the fact that too many of his fifth-graders lacked basic math fluency and that the teaching materials available, he developed MathFactLab, a teaching method that pairs math fact problems with visual models on flash cards that Kenny says helps students learn math facts through understanding rather than memorization.
