The University of Colorado Boulder is granting some countermeasures requested by faculty, staff and students regarding the installation of a controversial statue on campus honoring former football coach Bill McCartney.

The statue was unveiled on Friday and honors McCartney, who died in January at age 84 and led the Buffaloes to the only national title in program history in 1990. Before the statue was unveiled, students, faculty and staff raised concerns about the impact of honoring McCartney with a statue due to his anti-LBGTQ+ comments and affiliations and requested several countermeasures. The statue’s unveiling was protested by LGBTQ+ advocates on Friday, who showed up outside CU’s practice fields, according to the Boulder Reporting Lab.
