ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. —
The persistent sinkhole reopened in St. Clair County on Tuesday during severe storms .
The sinkhole has opened several times since July. Earlier this month , crews had told WVTM 13 that it should be permanently fixed.
The Alabama Department of Transportation confirmed that this time, the sinkhole experienced "additional settling" because of the rain.
Now, they said additional work may be necessary and crews are monitoring the spot. The northbound lane of US-231 is closed "to carry out additional work to protect the public."
WVTM 13 investigated the sinkhole and the concern for drivers. Learn about the complexity of fixing a sinkhole below.
