OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha Fire Department is sharing some kitchen safety tips with residents ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
According to the NFPA , Thanksgiving is the #1 day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve in the next two spots, so OFD says a little caution can go a long way to keep people safe.
NFPA research also says unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and fire-related deaths. Cooking has caused 52% of all reported home fires, 36% of home fire injuries, and 16% of home fire deaths.
OFD shared these safety tips ahead of the holiday season:
Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
Stay home while your turkey is roasting and check it often.
Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove.
