Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been detected in states surrounding New Mexico, and horses from New Mexico could have come into contact with the virus at events in Texas and Oklahoma.

According to the New Mexico Livestock Board, horses that attended the 2025 WPRA World Finals and Elite Barrel Race in Waco on Nov. 5-9, and horses that attended the Barrel Futurities of America in Oklahoma could have come into contact with the EHM disease that is linked to equine herpes virus.

The livestock board says horses from New Mexico attended these events and owners should take the following precautions:

Isolating the horses that attended the events for at least two weeks.

Having a temperature of returning horses monitored for two weeks after the last known exposure.
