CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - The State Corporation Commission approved Dominion Energy’s proposal for a gas-fired power plant in Chesterfield on Tuesday, clearing the way for the controversial $1.5 billion project.

The plant is expected to be operational by 2027. Dominion Energy had pushed for the development, saying it is necessary to meet Virginia’s growing energy demands.

Opponents said the project disregards the state’s Clean Economy Act.
