WASHINGTON — Sir Richard Branson's wife Joan has died, the Virgin Group founder announced. She was 80.

Branson announced the news of his wife's death Tuesday on Instagram , saying he was "heartbroken."

"Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away," he said in his caption. "She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for."

"She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world," The 75-year-old entrepreneur added. "Love you forever, Joan x."

Branson did not reveal a cause of death.

Branson and Joan share three children: Holly, 44, Sam, 40 and Clare Sarah, who died at four days old in 1979.

Sam also paid tribute to his mother on Tuesday.
