PORTLAND, Ore. — Travelers at Portland International Airport had mixed reactions Tuesday to a new federal campaign encouraging passengers to bring more respect and civility back to the skies.
The Department of Transportation is calling it the “Golden Age of Travel Starts with You” initiative, which reminds people that small acts of courtesy — from saying please and thank you to airline staff to considering how they dress — can make flights calmer and more pleasant.
The campaign comes as millions of Americans prepare for one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The DOT said reports of unruly passenger behavior have surged in recent years, rising 400% since 2019 and peaking at nearly 6,000 incidents in 2021 during the height of the pandemic.
