As the city of Santa Fe seeks to tackle its ongoing housing shortage, officials hope changes to parking requirements included in Phase 1 of the land use code update will help cut building costs and promote walkability.

"We're changing the paradigm when it comes to parking," Land Use Director Heather Lamboy said at a Nov. 19 special City Council meeting where the council unanimously approved an ordinance updating the code.

The first comprehensive update of the land use code since 1987, the ordinance is the first of a three-phase process that will include more significant changes in the second phase.
