A Baltimore jury on Tuesday awarded more than $21 million in a civil lawsuit to the victims of an attempted murder and arson at the hands of the man who also killed a well-known tech CEO.
Jason Billingsley was charged in a Sept. 19, 2023, case in which he sexually assaulted and slashed the throat of April Hurley and beat Jonte Gilmore before setting their basement apartment in Edmondson Village on fire.
Days after Hurley and Gilmore were attacked, Pava LaPere was reported missing on Sept. 24, 2023, and found dead the next day inside her Mount Vernon apartment.
In 2024, Billingsley, a repeat violent offender, pleaded guilty in the Edmondson Village case and was sentenced to life in prison. He also pleaded guilty to killing LaPere in exchange for a life sentence.
