WASHINGTON (WBAY) - The Social Security Administration is warning about a new scam.
It’s coming as an unexpected letter, email or text with a threat that your Social Security number is being suspended due to criminal activity.
The real government website, ssa.gov , shared an example of the scam that uses an official looking attachment on fake letterhead for the Office of the Inspector General for the Social Security Administration.
It’s stamped “official document” and “official government communication” -- but it’s neither of those.
It provides a phone number that, to add realism, has a Washington, D.C. area code.
If you call it, a scammer will answer posing as a Social Security or Office of the Inspector General employee, and will further the sense of urgency saying your case is
