ORIGINAL NEWS STORY: A jack-knifed tractor-trailer shut down Route 17 in Paramus, causing major delays and prompting a Hazmat response on early Wednesday, Nov. 26, one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near the Garden State Parkway, involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car, according to Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti. Responders found the tractor leaking fuel and requested Bergen County Hazmat and the Department of Transportation to the scene.
Route 17 North was fully closed at Century Road, and the left and middle lanes on the southbound side were briefly shut down. All southbound lanes were reopened later in the morning, but the northbound side remained closed as of 7:30 a.m., police said. Drivers were urged to take alternate routes.
The 55-year-old driver of the Hyundai Tucson involved in the crash was taken to a nearby hospital after reporting pain. The investigation is ongoing.
