Bob Fisher, 76, spent a recent Friday morning driving some 30 miles across Salem and Keizer to deliver eight Thanksgiving meals to veterans in need.
Fisher, a Vietnam veteran, made the deliveries Nov. 21 as part of the local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter’s annual holiday food distribution event.
The group, chapter 271 , launched the effort around four years ago with just 45 deliveries. They do one delivery for Thanksgiving and another for Christmas.
This year, they delivered about 250 Thanksgiving food kits – a record high for them.
About 90 were dropped off late last week to local homeless shelters and National Guard centers. The remaining kits were put together starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday with the help of over a dozen volunteers, and delivered to veterans’ doorsteps by four
