AUGUSTA, Maine — A Saturday afternoon fire that swept through a long-vacant Augusta home started in an area where investigators say people had been squatting, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

The blaze at 33 Pike St. was reported around 3:23 p.m. on Nov. 22.

Multiple 911 callers reported seeing the house on fire, and one caller told dispatchers they saw three men running from the property. Augusta police quickly located the men, according to a news release.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames inside the single-family home. Crews from Litchfield, Vassalboro and Winthrop assisted the Augusta Fire Department in suppressing the fire. No injuries were reported.
