WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — A court in northern Arizona has blocked the Navajo Nation Council's recent attempt to potentially remove President Buu Nygren from office.

On Tuesday, the council announced that the Window Rock District Court had granted a temporary restraining order to stop the council from taking action on legislation that would initiate the removal of President Nygren and Vice President Richelle Montoya.

The recent events are the latest escalation in tensions between the two branches of government on the Navajo Nation. Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley introduced the removal legislation last week.

Council leaders claim the removal legislation is warranted due to allegations of nepotism, mismanagement of executive funds and creating a "hostile work environment."
