Tupelo Police say a 5-year-old child was rescued from a locked vehicle at a Walmart on West Main Street Tuesday afternoon, and the child’s mother has been arrested and charged.

According to Tupelo Police, officers were called to Walmart at 2270 West Main Street on November 25, regarding a report of a child locked inside a vehicle.

Around 12:50 p.m., officers arrived and found a 5-year-old child unresponsive but breathing in the back seat of a parked vehicle. Police say the doors were locked and the child was not waking up, so officers broke a rear window to get to the child.

The child was then moved into a patrol unit with air conditioning until medics arrived. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the child at the scene and determined transport to a hospital was not required.
