TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Online ‘sextortion’ is a form of digital blackmail in which predators pressure victims into providing intimate images, and then use those photos as leverage to make demands.
The National Center For Missing And Exploited Children said it received about 546 thousand reports of financial sextortion in 2024. That’s nearly 100 reports a day and a 192% increase from 2023. Authorities said that number continues to grow, with the most common victims of the crime being teenage boys.
Sextortion is one of the fastest-growing crimes globally, which is why experts say it’s so important that kids understand what can happen. Parents are encouraged to create a space where kids feel comfortable opening up to them, and to talk to their children about safe internet use.
