HEWITT, Texas — The cheerful sound of bells ringing outside stores across the area signals more than just the holiday season , it's a call to help neighbors in need, and this year, the 6 News team is answering that call.

The Red Kettle Campaign has been a cornerstone of Salvation Army fundraising for more than 125 years. What began in 1891, when Captain Joseph McFee placed an iron pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing, has grown into a nationwide tradition that serves millions.

Major Jeff Miracle, with the Salvation Army in Waco, says the red kettles are more than just a Christmas symbol, they're a lifeline that sustains year-round programs.

"We have red kettles all over Waco, and it's a way that we raise money that helps us throughout the year," Miracle explained. "They help us at Christm
