The “vigilante justice” inflicted on a Calgary motorist who brandished a handgun at the occupants of another car — and later shot one in the head — should spare him a prison term, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Defence counsel Jim Lutz argued the mitigating factors in Ethan El-Khatib’s case , including that he was “savagely” beaten by three men, should land him a conditional sentence to be served in the community.
