NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Tennessee transportation and safety officials are urging people to prepare for travel during the holidays.
With the start of the Thanksgiving travel period, Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Matt Perry noted key statistics from last year’s holiday:
Eight people were killed in crashes statewide
One fatality occurred every 13 hours and 30 minutes
Two of the eight victims were not wearing seat belts
THP will be launching its annual holiday safety initiative to help reduce serious crashes in the Volunteer State. Troopers will have a heavy presence on interstates on the two busiest travel days, which are Wednesday, November 26, and Sunday, November 30.
Officials urge drivers to buckle up, slow down and avoid distractions while traveling.
