OREGON, USA — Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield led a multi-state lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block federal guidance that would cut off food assistance to thousands of lawful permanent residents.

Rayfield and 21 other attorneys general are challenging new guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that treats several groups of legal immigrants as ineligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, including permanent residents who were granted asylum or admitted as refugees.

The attorneys general argue the guidance contradicts federal law and could impose significant financial penalties on states.
