HARWOOD, N.D. — A volunteer firefighter in Cass County says he's grateful, and probably lucky, to be alive.
While risking his life in blizzard-like conditions, he had a close call with a driver, who wasn't paying attention.
Deputy Fire Chief Brian Giere called it the closest call he's had in his 17-year career, but it did not stop him from heading back out to Interstate 29 on Wednesday morning, Nov. 26, for two more crashes.
"Not a great memory," said Giere as he re-watched Tuesday's close call on his computer. It was caught on camera by a dash cam inside one of the department's fire trucks.
Giere said the out-of-control pickup came within 10 feet of hitting him. The pickup almost hit another firefighter and a trooper.
"Your whole life goes before your eyes," he said.
