LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Battling a fire isn’t the ideal family activity on Thanksgiving Day. But according to the National Fire Protection Association, it’s the peak day for home cooking fires.

The problem that arises is unattended cooking, that causes a lot of fires annually,” Lufkin Fire Chief Jesse Moody said.

Moody said watching what you’re cooking should help prevent many fires. That goes for both indoors and outdoors. Many use Thanksgiving as a time to try an alternative way of cooking the main dish.

“I personally deep fry mine every Thanksgiving and it takes roughly 40 minutes for a 10-to-12-pound turkey on 350 degrees,” Moody said.

Moody said if done correctly, frying a turkey shouldn’t be an issue. He learned that the hard way when his stepfather fried a turkey one year.
