WASHINGTON — U.S. Attorney Janine Pirro on Thursday provided new details about a shooting that left two West Virginia National Guard members critically wounded while serving in the nation’s capital.
Pirro, speaking at a news conference alongside federal, military and local officials, said the guardsmen — identified as 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolf — were ambushed near 17th and I streets NW, close to the Farragut West Metro station, around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The soldiers were in Washington as part of an executive order directing National Guard support to enhance safety in the District, Pirro said.
According to investigators, a lone gunman opened fire on the uniformed guardsmen without provocation, using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. One soldier was struck,
