Parts of Sri Lanka have been evacuated as an intense storm has sparked flooding and landslides that have killed at least 31 people.
The country's National Building Research Organisation has issued Red Alerts calling for the immediate evacuation of several areas, including Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Monaragala, and Nuwara Eliya.
The central tea-growing highlands, popular with Brit holidaymakers, have been the hardest hit areas so far. In the Badulla district, 16 people were buried alive when mountain slopes collapsed onto their homes overnight. Another four fatalities were reported in a similar landslide in the adjoining Nuwara Eliya district.
