A 68-year-man being held as a fugitive in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center died early Thursday morning, the sheriff's office said.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said the man was in the intake booking area of the jail when he became unresponsive. The medical staff and Gretna parmedics tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, who was not identified, was arrested Friday as a fugitive wanted in an unspecified jurisdiction, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators do not suspect foul play, the sheriff's office said, and an autopsy will be conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.
