DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) -More than 8,000 customers in northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are spending Thanksgiving without power after Tuesday’s winter storm.

Heavy, wet snow and high winds Tuesday damaged trees, poles and power lines across the Hayward, Manitowish Waters and Ironwood areas. Xcel Energy says about 14,000 customers lost power. Nearly 40 percent have service restored as of Thursday morning.

As of Thursday, about 6,800 customers remain without power in Ironwood and about 155 in Hayward.

The company brought in crews from the Twin Cities, southeastern Minnesota and South Dakota to help with repairs. Most remaining outages in the Hayward area will be completed by Thursday evening. Whatever outages remain in Ironwood will be restored Friday.
