LANSING — Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel is suing the federal government to stop what she calls an unlawful move to cut off food assistance for thousands of permanent residents.
Nessel joined 21 other attorneys general in challenging new USDA guidance that says refugees, asylees, and other legal immigrants as permanently ineligible for snap benefits.
The new guidance applies even after green cards are obtained.
Nessel says the policy contradicts federal law and could expose states to massive financial penalties.
The lawsuit argues the USDA memo was issued incorrectly and gives states no time to comply, creating confusion and risking wrongful benefit terminations.
The coalition is asking the court to block the guidance to prevent families from losing critical access to food assi
