BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Two Burlington families have turned Thanksgiving into a time-honored football tradition that has lasted more than six decades.

Every Thanksgiving for the last 60 years and counting, the Finnegans and Mahoneys have taken to the gridiron for their annual family rivalry.

“We don’t really keep track of the victories except for the year that you win,” Michael Mahoney explained.

Mahoney has been there since the tradition’s birth in the 1950s. He said, like the families, it has grown since then.

“You just see this happen. You watch the kids grow up, and it’s fun to just kind of taunt each other across the field,” he said.

The tradition spans generations. Joseph Michael Finnegan III said this year was a back-and-forth battle.
