The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and for the north shores of Maui, through 4 a.m. Friday.
Large waves between 20 to 24 feet are expected on the north shores and 10 to 14 feet in height on west shores, forecasters said.
But forecasters caution a moderate northwest swell could remain, meaning the high surf advisory may be extended through late morning.
North and west-facing shore surf should significantly drop by Friday afternoon and evening, forecasters say.
“Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous,” the advisory warns.
