An expansive tract of wetlands and mature forest just a stone’s throw from Owen Sound is in the final stages of being permanently protected.

The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy land trust and Ducks Unlimited Canada are making a last push to raise the funds needed to fully protect 600 acres south of the rail trail and west of the community of Benallen in Georgian Bluffs.

Called the Benallen Nature Preserve, the lands contain swamps teeming with countless birds and animals and rich mixed forests of hardwood and coniferous trees, including massive old-growth Eastern White Pine.
