EV owners will soon have to pay more
Following the Budget announcement confirming a pay-per-mile charge on hybrid and electric cars from April 2028, the car insurance expert MoneySuperMarket reveals how much, on average, drivers of electric vehicles could pay each year when the new charge comes into effect.
Based on mileage estimates for insurance quotes submitted in 2025, MoneySuperMarket has found the average annual mileage for electric cars is 8,116 miles. As such, from April 2028, the proposed rate of 3p per mile for fully electric cars could equate to an additional £243 annual charge for drivers of fully electric cars.
