A parliamentary spokesperson for the Department for Transport (DfT) has issued an update on the measures being brought in to tackle the record waiting times learner drivers are facing to sit their practical exam.

Figures published in August revealed that the average waiting time for a test in the UK reached around 22–24 weeks.

This is the highest level recorded in more than three years.

A spokesperson for AA Driving School has said that the current situation "cannot get much worse", as learners face the added complication of being targeted by scammers aiming to capitalise on the backlog by offering 'fake tests'.

Officials have urged learners not to book a test until they are confident they will pass, one of a range of measures aimed at countering the backlog.
