Education chiefs have warned that bringing in Scottish Government rules designed to ease teacher workloads could cost as much as £310 million a year.

COSLA, the council umbrella body, said that it had “significant concerns” about the policy, which would cut weekly class contact time for teachers by 1.5 hours to 21 hours.

The plan was part of a 2021 Scottish Government manifesto commitment, but has lingered in the long grass since then.

However, On 20 November, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth lit a fire under the proposals with a public statement outlining what she described as a “phased implementation of reduced contact time”.

Mrs Gilruth’s announcement set out several potential options, including a four-day teaching week with a dedicated professional learning day.
