As the holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is reminding shoppers to stay alert and take simple steps to avoid becoming victims of theft or fraud.

“ This time of year always brings concerns about safety,” said Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon. “Crowded stores, packed parking lots, and a rush to finish gift buying can make you an easy target for someone looking to steal your money, your merchandise or your identity. A little awareness goes a long way.”

With this in mind, Sheriff Koon offers the following safe shopping tips:

Thieves look for people who are alone so shop with a friend or family member when you can;

Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be home;

Keep cash in a front pocket instead of a purse or wa
