GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Xin Liu was arrested Thursday and is accused of a scheme to defraud and obtain property of over $20,000 from an elderly victim.

Court records show on July 30, Liu participated in a phone scheme that defrauded a victim in Gainesville of $35,000.

Officials with the Gainesville Police Department say Liu presented herself as an FBI agent as a part of the scam.

Gainesville police say the victim clicked a pop-up ad on his computer. They say he then received a call from the Department of Treasury who told him that people had taken his identity.

GPD say Liu confessed that she had the assumption that the clients were elderly and were being taken advantage of.

Liu is being held at the Alachua County Detention Center.
