A vehicle fire on Interstate 287 in Westchester County brought traffic to a standstill and left a car destroyed.

The incident happened in Port Chester on Wednesday, Nov. 26, when crews were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the westbound side of the highway near the High Street overpass, the Port Chester Fire Department said.

While units were responding, Port Chester’s chief advised that the burning vehicle was actually in the eastbound lanes and that all traffic lanes had been closed. Firefighters were soon directed to approach from Boston Post Road, entering the eastbound lanes from the westbound side.

Once they got to the scene, firefighters quickly knocked down the main body of the blaze. Crews then remained on scene for about 30 minutes before clearing the highway and returning to service.

More information about the cause of the blaze was not immediately available.
