Unai Emery admits he was worried by Aston Villa’s slow start to the season but believes that overcoming those early difficulties has made his team stronger.

Villa failed to win any of their first five matches across all competitions and did not score a Premier League goal until matchweek five at Sunderland.

Even after Matty Cash’s goal at the Stadium of Light, Emery criticised his team following the 1-1 draw, saying Villa were lazy in their defending and lacked a clear identity on the pitch.

Cash’s goal was the only shot on target Villa managed after Sunderland was reduced to 10 men, yet Regis Le Bris’ side still secured a draw despite going behind.
