WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 19-year-old male was critically injured Saturday when a vehicle trying to overtake another car collided with him, police said.

The crash happened at around 7:15 p.m. on Malakeke Street.

According to Honolulu Police, a 44-year-old motorist and his juvenile passenger were westbound on Malakeke Street when he traveled into the eastbound lanes to overtake another vehicle and struck the motorcyclist, who was ejected onto the roadway.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition. HPD said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Police said the motorist and his passenger remained at the scene and were not injured.

Investigators said speed appears to be a contributing factor to the collision. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol
