Pro-independence candidates have secured significant positions on the board of Alberta’s United Conservative Party (UCP) following the party's annual general meeting on Saturday. This shift indicates a growing influence of separatist sentiment within the party.
The AGM saw a record turnout of approximately 4,500 members. As attendees navigated through the venue, volunteers distributed two distinct voter guide cards representing opposing factions within the party. Five of the nine newly elected officers were featured on a card supporting the Alberta Prosperity Project's pro-independence candidates. This card included Samantha Steinke as Vice President of Communications, Helen Holder as Vice President of Fundraising, Vicki Kozmak-LeFrense for the North, Al Biel for Central, and Irma Roberts for Calgary. The card stated, "These people work for us!" and included a disclaimer noting that the guide highlighted candidates who have publicly supported Alberta sovereignty and grassroots values.
In contrast, the opposing slate, known as Strengthening Alberta’s Future Economy (SAFE), was described as "pro-establishment." Incumbent president Rob Smith was re-elected for a second term and topped the SAFE card. Other SAFE candidates who won include Stacy Vanderveen as secretary and Ed Vandenberg for the South region. The SAFE platform emphasizes building a stronger Alberta that can thrive both nationally and internationally.
During the meeting, pro-independence presidential candidate Darrell Komick addressed the crowd, stating, "I represent a large group of people whose voice hasn’t been heard." He urged members to watch episodes of "Injection of Truth" and expressed confidence in the UCP's potential for success in the next election, particularly in Edmonton and Calgary.
The Alberta Prosperity Project, which advocates for Alberta's sovereignty, has been actively seeking support for its cause. Their website poses the question, "Do you agree that the Province of Alberta shall become a Sovereign Country and cease to be a province in Canada?" The group has also made two trips to Washington, D.C., to garner support from U.S. officials.
At the AGM, Jeffrey Rath, a leader of the Alberta separatist movement, received enthusiastic applause when he asked attendees if they favored a "free and independent Alberta." Premier Danielle Smith responded by reiterating her support for an independent Alberta within a united Canada, a statement that elicited mixed reactions from the audience.
In his victory speech, Rob Smith acknowledged the significant questions facing Alberta. He stated, "Many are debating our place in Canada and calling for a referendum to give every Albertan a clear voice." He emphasized the importance of unity and focus within the party, pledging to prioritize all members' voices and maintain transparency as they move forward. Smith concluded by expressing pride in standing with Premier Smith, highlighting her daily efforts for the province.
