East Lansing — For the third time since 2020, Michigan State is looking for a new football coach.
The Jonathan Smith era ended Sunday when MSU athletic director J Batt fired him after just two years and 24 games on the job.
The former architect of Oregon State’s rebuild, Smith came to East Lansing in November 2023 with hopes of turning around a Spartan program decimated by the scandalous firing of Mel Tucker, who took over after the surprise retirement of Mark Dantonio in 2020. And though a 3-0 start brought optimism at the start of his tenure, that faded as he went 2-7 over the next nine games.
